Lenovo Thinkcentre: Odd BIOS beeps, hangs on boot

My desktop computer, a Lenovo Thinkcentre M52 9211, suddenly refused to boot the other day. Instead, it would give a series of beeps: three, then one, then three, then four. Then it would do nothing (except run the fan).

After digging around online, I found this gem:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/Beep-code-3-1-4-3/td-p/44259

It's for a different line of Lenovos, but the basic idea was that by taking out the RAM and blowing away any dust, the computer could be restored to normal working order (after re-inserting the RAM, naturally). So that's what I tried.

And it worked. :)

I wonder if this holds true for all Lenovos? All IBM PCs?

  1. I know this is an old thread but the more I reach out the more help I could possibly get to figuring out my issue.

So I just recently bought a laptop from a private seller on one of those "letgo" app for around $20 which in my option, for a laptop that retailed for almost $1800 from what I heard is a bargain. It's a ThinkPad X Series lenovo X61, with xubunt 4.4.0-21 installed? Hardware wise that I know is that it's got 2 gigs of ram and its a core duo. My issue is that I want to install windows but seems impossible! There is no post no splash screen no response to F keys, del, thinkvantage or esc buttons. just straight to the grub screen every time. Even with the only HDD pulled out! No matter what I do I can never get to the bios or boot select features. Anyone seen something like this before? I have already tried switching the ram, around letting the battery die and holding the power button for ten seconds but no change. it still loads into grub then loads into linux os. Im not sure what else to do. Pulling out the hard drive seems to stop it from loading the os but grub still loads up without the HDD. After all that I then decided to remove the cmos battery and now i have a black screen of death and a few beeps. Hope i didnt mess anything up for good. Thanks you in advance.
